实际上，这个研究发现用软刷“按摩”老鼠幼崽，模仿母鼠的舔舐，幼崽的健康状况能够大幅改善这表明触觉刺激对生命早期至关重要。

到了1986年，另一项研究将其拓展到人类身上。每天给早产儿按摩15分钟，能让他们的平均体重增长快47%，少住院6天。

1990年代这项技术开始被广泛地采纳到新生儿重症监护室（NICU）中，成为一种低成本、高回报的干预手段，每年能够节省50亿美元。
